2011 Worlds Gain Largest Audience

24 Aug Posted by in Demographics, Disc Golf News | Comments

For years, the primary objective for tournament directors throughout the disc golf world was to attract the largest gallery at their event in order to justify the marketing potential and exposure their sponsors were buying into.

And while having a solid gallery walk down the 18th fairway with the lead group during their final round is very much still a desirable outcome for any tournament, DiscGolfPlanet.tv has turned the promotional model on its head. Rather than finding ways to get the fans and gallery to the event, DGP is finding ways to get the event to the fans!

During this year’s 2011 PDGA Professional World Championship coverage in Santa Cruz, California, DiscGolfPlanet.tv established a new benchmark for global disc golf viewership. Indeed, with the PDGA’s largest event returning to the birthplace of the sport, combined with the impressive growth of disc golf over the last decade, DiscGolfPlanet.tv is quickly becoming the “go to” portal for fans around the world to enjoy Live Internet Broadcasting of the sport we love.

So how many and who were watching the 2011 PDGA worlds in Santa Cruz? The answer is that over 33,000 unique viewers from 147 nations clicked over to DiscGolfPlanet.tv to follow our coverage. These viewers turned into prolific propagators of the event too, generating over 150,000 streams from the Livestream content delivery network. These streams were viewed by individuals, as well as more than a few groups, who sat around the television to watch the broadcast.

These record-setting numbers surpassed our viewership from the 2010 United States Disc Golf Championship in Rock Hill, South Carolina where we gained approximately 30,000 unique viewers. The 2011 Worlds viewership came on the heels of a very successful broadcast from the 2011 European Open in Nokia, Finland. Our European coverage captured over 20,000 unique viewers during our five days of broadcasting.

While we encourage disc golf’s tournament directors to continue to attract as many fans as possible to their courses during disc golf tournaments (the players love to put on a show!), DiscGolfPlanet.tv too will continue our efforts to grow disc golf’s popularity through our media efforts. And so far, it seems to be working.
